Taylor Swift is only 22 years old, but she has been in the industry longer than many her same age . But the singer still, without fail, seems completely shocked anytime she wins anything . Sunday night’s American Music Awards may have changed that.
With her new album Red, Swift is showing she is all grown up, and her toned-down acceptance faces may actually be showing the woman she has become.
Even though she started her first acceptance speech with: “Thank you so much you guys, this is unreal,” she did so in a much less shocked way than she normally does. She simply smiled and acted thankful. But at this point, she has to know it’s very possible she could win things.
Swift’s performance seemed to be showing this new side as well.
She started “Trouble” in a white lace dress and cowboy boots, but throughout the song changed into a black and red corset dress. The song is about meeting the bad boy, and blaming only yourself when the relationship doesn’t work out. The outfit change presumably showed that transition, and possibly how it changes who you are.
Those who don’t follow the singer closely might think this new Taylor Swift started with the album Red, but as recently as the 2012 Country Music Awards, she used her surprised face every time she won anything, or really anytime anyone mentioned her. Swift was much less visible at Sunday’s AMAs because of the numerous genres of music, but did win Favorite Female Country Artist. She was up against fellow singers Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert.
Swift will undoubtedly be up for many more awards in next year’s ceremonies because her album came out last month, but for now, it looks like she is practicing her gracious-but-not-too-surprised face.
