Scandal's Mellie deals with the problems of being an intelligent woman

$

0

Mellie had to learn how to dumb it down tonight on Scandal in order to be a "woman of the people," and it represented a sad truth of our society.

More: Scandal's Olivia Pope is supposedly a Republican, but it makes no sense

The metaphor was absolutely not lost on us, thanks to creator Shonda Rhimes.

If male politicians seem like they have all the answers, they're leaders. They're knowledgable. But if a woman does, like Mellie (and *cough* Hillary Clinton), she's a know-it-all. She thinks she's better than everyone else. She isn't relatable.

It's a terrible double standard that Scandal dives right into as we dig into the first primary debate in our fake — but eerily close to our real life — election on the show.

More: 12 ways the Scandal presidential candidates are better than our real ones

Mellie has absolutely sold me this season. I've always thought she was an amazing character on the show, but I am finally starting to genuinely root for her as a person. She deserves the chance to prove herself to the country. She's been waiting long enough. And although I love Susan Ross and respect Edison Davis, Mellie is my girl. And that's saying something, considering in the real world, I'm a *gasp* proud Democrat.

But more than Mellie's party line, she's fighting for votes as a woman. She is suddenly responsible for proving to the country that women are more than capable. That they're worth more than the 78 cents to a dollar of a man. And even through some serious blunders, like tonight's burgergate, she can and probably will rise to the top. And once she gets to the top she will own it with Olivia (Kerry Washington) by her side.

More: Scandal's Scott Foley spills on Jake and Olivia's future together

Now that's a White House I want to see. The only better scenario I could imagine is if Olivia herself decided to run for president. Uh, Season 10 maybe?

Which candidate on Scandal are you rooting for?

Bringing Up Bates shows Kelly Jo's hilarious reaction to Whitney's baby news

Tonight, Bringing Up Bates was all about grandbaby Bradley's first birthday. Or so we thought.

More: Bringing Up Bates' Michaela Keilen hints at starting a family

Eldest Bates son Zach and his wife Whitney planned a grand birthday party for Bradley, who is the eldest grandchild for Kelly Jo and Gil Bates. And it was a big deal for the family clan. Everyone came out for the party: grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles (meaning the Bates siblings) and, of course, friends of the couple.

Since almost all of the Bates family was there (except for some of the older, married kids like Michaela and Brandon Keilen, and Alyssa and John Webster, because they live out of state), it was the perfect time to make a big family announcement.

And make one Zach and Whitney did.

The problem: Kelly Jo and Gil didn't exactly get it at first.

More: Bringing Up Bates' Chad & Erin Paine reveal baby's gender and name (EXCLUSIVE)

Zach and Whitney presented her parents and his parents, as well as their grandparents, with photos of the family of three. But what Kelly Jo didn't realize because she didn't have her glasses was that in the photo the family was holding a sign. And on the sign there was a message. A very important message that read, "Our family is growing by two feet and one heart, Baby Bates is due to arrive Summer (sic) 2016."

"It went right over our heads," Gil said with a laugh later while talking to the cameras.

"I think we were the last to know," Kelly Jo added with a smile.

But their confusion only made the moment all the more memorable. It was shared with excitement as the girls squealed and everyone congratulated the expectant family. Kelly Jo's jaw literally dropped when Gil did finally read the announcement to her.

More: Nathan Bates may have just confirmed his courtship on Bringing Up Bates

"I wanted to cry. I was just so happy," Whitney said of the moment. "And it was so loud in there because Carlin and all the girls were screaming 'Oh, my goodness! I can't believe you're pregnant!' It was just such a relief because I got to tell everybody. I was so happy. I just couldn't quit smiling."

"You still can't quit smiling," Zach added, also grinning from ear to ear.

Since the show was filmed, Whitney has announced that she is expecting a baby girl and they are naming her Kaci Lynn.

Melissa McCarthy's new film The Boss is another knee-slapping comedy, but this movie also makes an important statement about women supporting other women.

More: Gilmore Girls: 3 clues Melissa McCarthy is totally returning

McCarthy sat down for an interview with Bust magazine to talk about her new film, which she stars in and also wrote with husband Ben Falcone. The comedian said she had a specific idea for the film's message in mind while writing the script.

"Watching [women] become friends and then essentially become family, that's the kind of thing I root for when I watch a movie," Melissa said. "I want to see that. I love to show women and girls uniting. I love showing that because I think so often in movies, you see women just fighting and not liking each other. That's not real life. That's not the norm."

More: Why the Gilmore Girls revival can't happen without Sookie St. James

McCarthy also dropped some inspiring advice during the interview on why you don't need to stick to the status quo.

"There are just so many 'shoulds' in life," she said. "You should do this, you should wear this, you should drink this, you should only be eating this. We spend so much of our lives trying to follow the checklist, and there's an appeal to just throwing that list out."

More: Powerful reasons women should help each other (VIDEO)

Plus, McCarthy opened up about why she's drawn to playing quirky, awkward and complicated characters.

"I have a real fascination with people who have that wall up," McCarthy revealed. "Like, what put that up? I always wonder... 'what's on the other side of that?' I never quite buy that sort of bluster. It always kinda breaks my heart."

Batman v Superman's Christina Wren on what it's like working with Ben Affleck

The beautiful Christina Wren has had some good luck, but she's also paid her dues as a performer. We're excited to see her return in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as Major Carrie Farris, but we wanted to find out more about her personal journey.

Wren isn't just an actress, she's also a poet who spends a lot of time writing and performing slam poetry.

More: Race: 17 things about the real Jesse Owens that are not in the movie

"Poetry is such a beautiful way to express emotions and reflect the world around us through metaphor and imagery," she said. "Since it is not an on-the-nose art form, it can discuss and arouse so many themes, images, feelings, with simply the words that are chosen and how they are organized. Slam is also its own beast. You have to use metaphors and imagery and be evocative but also nail the performance or you're dead in the water. It is frightening and also an amazing training ground for reading an audience and responding accordingly."

Not surprisingly, Wren also thinks slam poetry has helped her as a performer.

"The biggest skill I learned was to have a set of options of things prepared and then, depending on the kind of crowd, depending on the order of the poets and where I fit into it, depending on what was performed immediately before me, I'd adjust the pieces I chose and the way I'd perform them. Even in the very moments of performing, if you feel you're losing a crowd — and you can tell, they're expressive — you have to adjust."

Wren landed the role of Major Carrie Farris in kind of a roundabout way. She thinks it was fate. "It's so hard to pin down, but for me, it does feel like something special happened," she said.

MoreDeadpool 101: 11 facts about the fun but edgy superhero flick

While working as an extra in movies and feeling glum about her prospects of having a successful acting career, Wren was cast in a hummus commercial that shot in Athens.

Athenos commercial

Athenos commercial

"A few months later the commercial played on TV and went viral. I got an email from a Warner Bros. casting associate saying a Hollywood director had seen the commercial and wanted me to audition for an 'Untitled Warner Bros. project,' would I please send a tape of myself performing the attached sides. I had no idea what it was but I sent in my tapes."

When she found out she booked a role in the new Superman movie, Wren cried. Especially strange was that the movie's director, Zack Snyder, also directed 300, which she had watched while she was in Greece where she shot the commercial that got her all the attention. "It was the thing from the heavens that I needed."

More9 ways Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is far better than the classic

Of course, we had to ask Wren what working with Ben Affleck was like.

Batman
Image: Warner Bros.

"Ben was really focused and in character while I was onset, which I respect," she said. "He's serious about his work and about this franchise and it's paying off. He's an incredible Batman."

Wren also told us that Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Lex Luther in the movie, was super sweet.

Lex Luthor
Image: Warner Bros.

"When I met him in the makeup trailer, I was actually leaving set for the day and I was surprised to see him so I got a little flustered! I've always really admired his work — the level of nuance he has and the confidence to work so honestly and in the moment are just lovely. I often feel surprised while watching his work and that's really special."

And we had to get the skinny on Superman himself, Henry Cavill.

Superman
Image: Warner Bros.

"Henry I know the best because we worked closely together on Man of Steel, as well," she said. "I filmed at the very end of the process while everyone was more laid back, and since we were traveling locations and in these small towns, we all hung out a lot after work. He's similarly serious about his character — super disciplined, I mean the training he goes through is no joke — but really kind and aware of what it means to be representing this character that people have such a deep emotional attachment to, that when they meet him, they aren't engaging as if they're just meeting Henry, the man, they're engaging as if they are meeting Superman, and that is a huge banner to carry."

Wren also has a serious side that showed through when we asked her what she would you like to see for women in 2016.

"I'd like to see rape and violence never occur again. I'd like to see all girls in all nations be able to safely attend school and avoid bodily harm, mutilation and forced marriage."

Since the presidential election is heating up, we were curious if Wren would be open to having a female president. "Of course!" she said, adding, "I think women are fully capable and would offer great leadership and perspective as president. I think it has to be the right woman and hopefully, as our nation becomes more used to the idea of women running for president, capable women will continue to prepare for the role and run, giving us many diverse options."

12 reasons the Plunketts in Mom are the new Gilmores

$

OK, so the Plunketts aren't exactly the humble, responsible Gilmore girls from small town Stars Hollow..., but that's what makes things interesting. Bonnie was an addict when Christy was young, and the apple doesn't fall from the tree in this sitcom. Both are recovering alcoholics who never lets the other forget it.

Mom GIF

They take the hip, edgy mother-daughter relationship to new levels. For example:

... and yes, they do play by the scrunchy-on-the-door-means-do-not-enter rule.

2. They find humor in the stickiest of situations

Like that one time Christy gambled away their rent money.

3. The mother-daughter eye roll is on point

Lorelai tried to escape Emily in Gilmore Girls, and Bonnie has a similar (but more extreme) coping method when her estranged mother wants to meet her.

5. They don't have that whole "picture perfect family" thing going for them, and it's refreshing

Mom TV show

Let's be honest, most families don't live behind a white picket fence or dine with fine china.

6. They talk about their love lives more like friends — sort of

Mom Gif
Image: fuckyeahmomcbs.tumblr.com

The Gilmores may have done it with a little more class (and much more PG), but the Plunketts leave all the cards on the table. If you're looking for boundaries, you won't find them here.

7. Remember when I said they never let each other forget?

New liver Mom Gif

The jokes between them are endless.

8. They never take themselves too seriously, a Gilmore girl staple

The Plunketts just have a much darker history to joke about than the Gilmores did.

9. They encourage each other to follow their dreams

Mom show GIF

The dreams don't involve Harvard or Yale, but when Christy wants to go back to school, Bonnie's there to troubleshoot.

10. They have each other's back

Ariel Winter says Kim Kardashian's selfies are beneficial to young girls

Ariel Winter is all about women supporting women, and she made her views very clear during an interview with Australian radio show Kyle and Jackie O, where she applauded Kim Kardashian for encouraging body positivity.

More: Ariel Winter proves she's proud of her body with new bikini pic (PHOTO)

"I think she's promoting body positivity. You know, young girls being able to express that they don't have a stick-thin body — they're curvy," Winter said.

This is not the first time Winter has defended Kardashian's decision to flaunt her curves, and when she recently decided to post a nude bathroom mirror selfie, Winter praised her, and publicly commented on how women and men should be able to choose what they do with their bodies. A sentiment that Winter touched on again during her interview.

"Stick-thin bodies are amazing, you know, those girls are amazing, too, but I think that everybody's body would be celebrated no matter what it is, and I think that it's great that she's so comfortable with herself and that she's able to post out there what she wants to and post and if she wants to post a nude selfie, she can," she said.

More: Kim Kardashian has the perfect (naked) response to slut-shamers (PHOTO)

Winter also highlighted the gross double standard that exists between men and women, and how the former can flaunt their bodies without criticism, but women are not afforded the same respect.

"When women do it, we're really crucified, and we're not able to do the exact same thing, and I think it's really upsetting to be in an industry where that's happening, so I really decided to stand up for her because I thought it was so ridiculous," Winter explained. "You know, it's not hurting anybody at all, if somebody doesn't like the post, they can unfollow them. There's no reason to go on and publicly bash them, and I think, you know, she's promoting positivity instead of being a bad role model."

More: Ariel Winter gets emotional while talking about her estranged mom (VIDEO)

She makes an important point. While no one is asking you to praise women for their nude selfies, there is also no reason to bash someone for what is essentially their decision. Do you agree?

"I thought it was going to be wack because typically Phaedra Parks doesn't like to address anything that can make her look bad on TV," Burruss said.

Parks must have thrown caution to the wind because "it ended up to where we had to address the issues as far as Phaedra and I, so that turned into a big debate between us as well as Kim. She started telling Kenya off. It was crazy!"

Burruss continued, "The other big drama was with Kim [Fields] and Kenya [Moore]. And I thought, Kim is not going to say anything; it's going to be boring. But the exact opposite happened!"

Jimmy Kimmel undermines Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign

In between touring the country, getting grilled by the press and actually running for president, Hillary Clinton has spent this election season making the pop culture rounds. She's appeared on Broad City and SNL and last night, she stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live. Kimmel put Clinton to work sharing her ideas and stumping on his platform. Of course, her speech doesn't last long before Kimmel interrupts her with a dose of mansplaining, aka when a man explains something in a patronizing tone (likely something she already knows) to a woman. The most genius part? He was mansplaining about Clinton's definition of mansplaining.

More: Why Hillary Clinton's clothes matter (Hint: They don't!)

Kimmel tried to one-up Clinton's definition of mansplaining, saying, "Actually, it’s when a man explains something to a woman in a condescending way. But you were close." It's refreshing to see a late-night host handle a poignant issue so well.

The two blatantly pointed how much Clinton's gender has affected her campaign. “It’s like nothing I do is right," Clinton says mockingly.

"Exactly," Kimmel agrees. "You’re not doing it right. I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s something. It’s that you’re not..." The answer, obviously, is "...a man," Clinton finishes.

Bernie Sanders also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week, tackling his go-to issues of campaign finance reform, climate change and legalizing marijuana.

Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are adding fuel to the fire of the rumors that they are back together with a new sexy sighting on a series of hot dates.

The pair has been seen at the Montage Beverly Hills hotel on a series of dates that definitely point to them being more than friends. Just days before Gomez was seen at Bieber's March 23 concert in Los Angeles, spies saw them together at the hotel for a series of secret dates.

"Selena and Justin spent time together at his hotel more than once in the last week," a source told HollywoodLife. "They were poolside, had lunch in the dining room and had a drink at the bar. While he didn't serenade her on the piano, they appeared flirty and very touchy-feely. They seemed very close, and you could tell there was some obvious sexual chemistry between them. They were mostly alone when together, preferring to spend time with each other than anyone else."

In response to a fan who asked why Messer puts herself through the torture of the show, Messer's tweetstorm went after the show's editing and MTV itself. "My point exactly. It's so sad how the person behind the editing can even live a happy life by... Editing to manipulate the audience watching. It makes me feel like my story just isn't enough," she tweeted.

Nick Jonas and Kate Hudson have never officially confirmed they're an item, but his new song might drop a major hint about their romance.

Jonas just dropped a new single titled "Close" with a special appearance by Tove Lo, and the lyrics point to a hot and heavy romance with someone special. Could it be Hudson?

More: Kate Hudson reportedly tried to make Nick Jonas jealous with a naked pic

Some lyrics include:

"I know, I know you know you're scared/Your heart, your mind, your soul, your body/They won't, they won't, they won't be careful/But I guess that you don't know me/'Cause if I want you, and I want you, babe/Ain't going backwards, won't ask for space/'Cause space is just a word made up by someone who's afraid to get too…/Close…"

Jonas recently discussed the rumors that he and Hudson are dating, and while he did not come right out and say that, yes, they are gettin' it on, he barely danced around the subject — but his use of the past tense implied that the romance, if there is one, had run its course.

"Kate's incredible. We had an unbelievable connection as two humans who just admire things about each other and see something in each other that's beautiful," Jonas told Complex magazine. "Out of my best effort to respect her and her privacy, I'm not going to say if we had sex or not. But we did have a beautiful connection. Even now I have so much admiration and respect. She's amazing."

Jonas' new album Last Year Was Complicated — a reference to his breakup with Olivia Culpo — is set to drop on June 10, 2016.

The amazing thing about social media and the internet is that we are constantly provided with entertaining videos, podcasts, books, music and witty moments. The horrible thing about social media and the internet is that we are constantly provided with entertaining videos, podcasts, books, music and witty moments. How the heck are we supposed to keep up with all of it?

If you find yourself lagging behind when it comes to the week in pop culture, fret not. We've got you covered. In no particular order, here's a roundup of what you might have missed out on.

1. Aladdin's magic carpet ride through San Francisco

Aladdin Magic Carpet San Francisco

Aladdin Magic Carpet San Francisco

Seriously, it's not hard to understand why this video by YouTuber couple PrankvsPrank got more than 1.1 million hits in one day. Besides the fact that it's the best use of a drone and electric skateboard of all time, it also gives us all the Disney Aladdin feels. Good luck trying not to sing "One Jump Ahead" on repeat this weekend.

It's hard to pinpoint the best thing about this Twitter video. There's the obvious initial faceplant, the subsequent stumble, the mom yelling, "Are you OK, honey?" and the runner's harried reaction to her mom adding to her embarrassment. It's an instant classic that blew up the internet.

3. Every Superhero Ever

Smosh's Every Superhero Ever

Smosh's Every Superhero Ever

Smosh's video lampooning the lack of racial diversity in casting superheroes, sexist double standards within the genre and the redundancy of the movies' plots got a whopping 1.7 million views in 24 hours.

But the major discussion it raised among fans? The age-old DC vs. Marvel debate.

4. The ShackHouse podcast blows up

Image: iTunes

Even if you're not into golf, The ShackHouse with Geoff Shakelford is a podcast you might want to be listening to. On March 25, the show was ranked No. 1 on iTunes Charts — no small feat considering Serial comes in at No. 2, TED Radio Hour comes in at No. 3 and This American Life comes in at No. 6.

When the All That reunion promo went viral at the beginning of the week, '90s kids everywhere literally jumped up and cheered. Original cast members Danny Tamberelli, Kel Mitchell, Josh Server, Lori Beth Denberg and Kenan Thompson are all confirmed to appear, but the huge question lurking in fans' minds is: Will Amanda Bynes show up?

The reunion special will air on The Splat sometime in April.

John Oliver for president?

In an episode of Last Week Tonight early in the week, Oliver ripped Trump a new one and figuratively tore down the presidential hopeful's proposed wall to separate the United States from Mexico. The 35-foot-high, 1,000-mile-long wall will cost a fortune, and Oliver pokes holes in Trump's assertions that it shouldn't be that costly to maintain by calling it "a big, dumb thing that only gets more expensive over time."

"It’s like getting a pet walrus,” Oliver says in his 18-minute segment. "You think it’s stupid now. Wait until you learn what a bucket of sea cucumbers costs."

7. YouTube star gets major backlash for a not-that-racy Snapchat photo

Zoella

Farrah Abraham is raising the ire of the internet yet again with a controversially racy new photo — just in time for the holiest holiday of the Christian calendar.

Teen Mom star Abraham posted a photo posing in bunny ears and underwear, accompanied by professional escort Jenna Shea.

It is unclear how the two women know each other, but people are definitely reading between the lines and voicing their disgust that Abraham would post an obvious and overtly sexual reference to Easter on Good Friday.

"This human had the audacity to hash tag good friday. If you were really a believer in Jesus Christ, you would at least keep your wore self off His holiday," wrote Instagram user mrs.paulk.

"Seriously disgusting," wrote amandaram.

"Good Friday? Don't bring a religious holiday into a picture of your ass," wrote helenationca.

The commentary continued on Facebook, where Abraham also posted the photo.

Tabitha Pinkston wrote, "Because that's what Easter is about...Your daughter must be so proud!"

Megan Owen wrote, "I don't usually comment on your nonsense because quite frankly if you want things like this to an example your child has to look at, that's you. But when you go to putting #goodfriday on your provocative pathetic excuse of ‘work' that's where I have a problem. I hope and pray that one day you learn the REAL meaning of Good Friday and that one day your child has a better example than this. Thank goodness that there are still some of us women that know how to take pictures with our clothes ON and that aim to raise our daughters to have more respect for themselves than this!!"

And Nicole Noe wrote, "LMAO.....i love the good Friday hashtag.... This girl really DGAF....i mean that attitude is great for her because she obviously doesn't care, but it really is sad that she doesn't see the perception she gives off to others, and its not a good image...who cares if you have money when no one respects you or takes you seriously."

Perhaps Abraham will try to make up for the transgression by skipping the steak for dinner tonight in favor of some fish.

Kim Richards fights nonstop with her Mother/Daughter Experiment co-stars

More: Two Real Housewives stars have reunited — and fans are thrilled

This week on The Mother/Daughter Experiment, the show took yet another page from Marriage Boot Camp and challenged the mother/daughter duos to construct Ikea furniture in order to hone their communication skills, and also maybe win a spa day. (Ikea is getting some kind of cut from all this, right?) In therapy, Dr. Debbie Magids urged the women to reveal what they'd been hiding from one another, and everyone confessed what was bothering them, including Kimberly Jackson, who told her mother, Kim Richards, that she always felt as though she had to protect her emotionally. Given what we know about Richard's health, it wasn't a surprise that Jackson voiced her concern about her mother's psychological state, but it was sad to hear her confirm the amount of emotional caretaking she's been doing, especially at such a young age.

More: Kim Richards leaves rehab — but is she healthy?

Guess who was not worried about protecting Richard's emotions? Heidi Montag. On Friday, Montag decided she'd had it with Richards being late to things and not respecting everyone's time. She apparently took Dr. Deb's advice to be herself (in the context of her relationship with her mother, but OK) very literally, and called out Richards. "Heidi has no idea what she's getting herself into, coming into my mom's room and confronting her," Jackson said. Richards didn't let things lie — she accused Montag of starting trouble, claiming that no one else in the house had ever said anything to her about being late, and she was being an instigator. In response, Heidi did a lot of nodding and refrained from making facial expressions.

In just four episodes of the show, Richards has already quarreled with castmate Natalie Nunn, after Nunn started an argument with her daughter and Shar Jackson's daughter, Cassie, about a rumor she thought they started (or rather, that she thought they Googled and then told everyone else about). We didn't actually get a resolution to that fight, which means we'll probably have to return to it at some point before the end of the season — although, for her part, Nunn seems really into running around the house and yelling at people for talking about her.

It seems like, at this rate, Richards is going to be in the center of at least some of the drama in every episode, whether it means getting into it with her co-stars, threatening to leave, or having super-emotional reactions to what's being asked of her in therapy. Not that the same isn't true for Montag, who said on Friday's episode that she'd choose husband Spencer Pratt over her mother, but that's what happens when you put reality stars on a show with other reality stars — they're going to vie for attention, even (especially) if they're supposed to be in therapy.
